The House

2007-07-23

Tony and I went to see the house yesterday and it was exactly as I'd pictured it.  At least the layout was.

I don't think the kitchen has been touched since the house was built.  Same cabinets, appliances & flooring.  Functional but, very outdated.  Think, Brady Bunch.  *IF* we were to buy the house, the first thing we'd have to do is completely tear out the kitchen.

The other thing I didn't like about it was that the laundry room is in the basement.  Same thing I have here and I absolutely do not want that again.  There's no place to move it upstairs.

Otherwise, it was a perfectly lovely home.  The lot is gorgeous, the house is as neat as a pin and has been well maintained.

BUT! It's not for us.

I really think we're going to have to build.  It's not that we can't find a house to suit our needs, it's usually the l ocation.  All of the homes that we like are in subdivisions and hub absolutely does NOT want to live in a subdivision.  I wouldn't mind so much but, would prefer not to either.

So that's that for now, until the next time....

wondering why the word L O C A T I O N won't show up in my posts!  This is the second time this has happened?  I think I fixed it but, that's a silly word to block.

I live in a house built in 1936 with an itsy bitsy kitchen. That's okay, though...I never cook, anymore. No subdivisions for me, either. I live in an urban area. The commute alone would kill me if I had to live in a subdivision.

You buy an old house, it stays an old house and you get all sorts of problems. You buy a new house and you can customize it a bit. New houses also put the laundry on the first floor or second near the bathrooms. If you get an old house and have to remodel the kitchen, try to fit the laundry in there. One of my friends has an older home and she had the linen closet in the downstairs bathroom converted into a laundry with the stackable washer/dryer. I thought that was very clever. Good luck!

Building is fun, but VERY stressful. It'll make planning weddings and parties seem like, well, like weddings or parties. This is especially true if you act as your own GC, which is usually the way to go if you're trying to get the most bang for your buck, but it can become frustrating, even with the best of subs. For me, it was always the timing of things that would get screwed up. Usually no one's fault either, really, just the way it seems to go.

You might start some line drawings of how you'd like the layout! Bathroom between 2 bedrooms, or bathroom in each Where are the bedrooms. bathrooms kitchen living room..utility room etc.!!!

The nice thing about house-hunting for you is that there's no deadline. You can take as much time as you want to look and previous experience has given you an idea of what you want. Good luck!

Couldn't you remodel the kitchen to add a cubby for the washer & dryer appliances? Put them behind a "pocket" door or something............ **Just befor you submit your post do you give it a "category"? If not, that might help in not flagging it as spam. Location is a good word for real estate spam.
