I finally figured out how to add friends to your friend's list. Just click on the person's profile and under their picture it says, Add Friend, tada!
I think I'm finally getting the hang of this :)

Yes, very easy and no requests so no reciprications. Also, if you have friends on your list, whatever they post (blog entry, comments, images, etc) shows up on your message control page.
